"Post at 9am" advice made for a New York audience doesn't automatically work for a Lagos one. Time zones, data costs, work patterns and even network congestion all shape when Nigerian audiences are actually scrolling โ and getting this wrong quietly kills reach before a single caption or image gets judged.
Why generic posting-time advice falls short
Most posting-time guides are built on U.S. or European usage data. They assume a 9-to-5 office culture, fast home broadband, and audiences checking their phones on a commute by train. Nigeria's rhythm is different: heavier data usage on Wi-Fi at night, unpredictable traffic-driven commute times, and a lot of active browsing during lunch breaks and after work rather than first thing in the morning.
What we've found actually moves the needle
Early evening still wins
Across the accounts we manage, engagement consistently climbs between 7pm and 10pm โ after work, after traffic, when people are home and on Wi-Fi. This is prime time for Instagram and Facebook in particular.
Lunch-hour is a real window
Between 12pm and 2pm, we see a second smaller spike โ people checking their phones on a break. It's shorter-lived than the evening window but worth testing for time-sensitive posts or promotions.
Weekends behave differently by platform
TikTok and Instagram Reels often perform well on Saturday afternoons, when people have more relaxed scrolling time. Facebook, on the other hand, tends to see steadier engagement through Sunday evening as people wind down before the week starts.
Don't copy this list blindly either
These are patterns, not laws. A skincare brand's audience and a car dealership's audience don't keep the same schedule. The right approach is to post consistently for a few weeks, watch when *your* audience actually engages, and adjust from there โ which is exactly what we do for every account we manage.
The bigger lesson
Posting time matters, but it's a multiplier, not a fix. A weak post at the perfect time will still underperform a strong post at an average time. Get the content right first, then use timing to help it find its audience faster.
